If you have ever read "Shake the sphere's" "OTHELLO" you would definitely like "OMKARA". Its a brialliant adaptation however the regular film goers may not get the movie since they are more carried away by regular saas -bahu soaps or KJ's "Big Family" setup's based in UK/New York.
Vishal Bharadwaj needs to be appreciated for his bold direction for the way the movie was setup in the rural areas of UP. Though there is much usage of abusive language it really suits the setup the director has chosen. Those who havent read "OTHELLO" would find "OMKARA" as an average flick about a man poisoned with jealousy with his sub-ordinate , kills his own lover and later himself.
Shakespear's Tragedy && Bhardwaj's Crew:
DarkSkinned Moor of Venice (Othello) - half Brahmin, Dark Complexioned chief of the outlaws (Omkara)
envious, conniving and cunning Iago - limping, tobacco-chewing, cursing, Langda Tyagi
handsome, charming and self-pitying Cassio - Kesu Phirangi
beautiful and madly-in-love Desdemona becomes the fair-skinned Dolly Mishra
The jealous, revengeful Roderigo becomes Rajan.
The seductive Bianca becomes Billo.
Thoough Vishal has taken the independence to change the script slightly, he has maintained the concept intact.Actors have outplayed their very characters really well. Saif was at his best and takes off a way ahead for he has the most number of dialogues. Kareena's role is definitely role of substance then the regular glamourous role she does and no wonder people feel pity for her character as the plot starts revealing. Oberio is has justified his character for he has been a bakra in his real life as well as the movie :) And Ajay's role looks he has tailored himself for "OMKARA". Though half the dialogues are OHT (Over head transmission) but there are moments of humour song and dance, especially the lyrics of some songs were too poetic - in the regular gulzarish style.
Overall the movie is very shakeshearish too its core. Vishal made a laudabale attempt adapting a literary work that was written some 400 years ago , it may not be a "BOX OFFICE" hit unlike the regular "Family Antakshari type movies" :)
